A new AT&T device is said to patch dead zones on your home. But some consumers think otherwise.

The exclusive iPhone carrier in the US just sent out certificates to some customers granting them FREE – a device that improves reception at home. ’s 3G MicroCell patches dead zone with the carrier’s service. Just plug the device into a connection and it will provide local signal for both voice and data.

Individual or FamilyTalk subscribers can pay an additional $19.99 (US) on their monthly bill to make unlimited calls. The 3G MicroCell costs $149.99 (US) with a $100 (US) mail-in rebate if you choose the MicroCell calling plan. Customers who purchase a new AT&T broadband line service are eligible for a $50 (US) mail-in rebate. Aside from the purchase of the device, no additional costs are associated with the hardware. But the “loyal customers” that received a letter from AT&T can have the device for free.

However, some consumers suspect that the timing of giving away the free hardware has something to do with the fact that the two-year contract for the three handsets will expire in two months time. So will it solve all of your problems? Some consumers don’t think so.
