Graphene, aside from being hot, is also the strongest material known to man. But researchers world-wide have been looking for ways to take advantage of its structural and electrical properties. This honeycomb crystal lattice material has a lot of potential for use in electronic devices, and it can be capable of replacing silicon transistors.
It has the ability to serve as a superconductor and has multitude of properties ideal for transistors. Aside from the fact that it can tap out silicon, the graphene transistors is also capable of ambipolarity or switching between three varying modes of operation. So far, researchers tested graphene transistors that can operate at ten times the speed of the fastest silicon transistors.
With material scientists and engineers working around the clock, it’s no brainer that graphene can someday be a cheap alternative for silicon. Mass production of graphene can be a bit of a challenge as of the moment. But let’s hope that it can come around the corner soon.View Article Source »
