The Story Behind Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 Alternate Costumes
While some alternate costumes appear to be the developers toying with the color palette, others have a meaningful story behind the grays and yellows.
Ever wonder what’s the deal behind the alternate costumes of some characters in Marvel vs. Capcom 3? While some may be the developer’s way of mercilessly toying with the color palette, others tend to have a more meaningful and story-driven approach as to why such costumes exist. You might be surprised that some alternate costumes are reminiscent of classic looks rooted out from comic book history.
Chris Baker, manager of Licensed Games at Marvel Studios shared, a few thoughts about the alternate costumes of five Marvel characters, namely: Captain America, Storm, M.O.D.O.K., Dormammu, and Phoenix. In a nutshell, the alternate costumes of each of the above-mentioned characters take different facets and looks from various versions and history of their existence.
Take Jean Grey aka Phoenix for example. Her alternate costumes vary from Greg Park’s Phoenix:Endsong to a classic 90’s Jean Grey of X-men TV series color scheme. Every detail has a story behind it which engages the player to choose other costumes than just fighting out who picks the original costume first.
Chris Baker did mention that Gameplay always comes first over the aesthetics of costume design as developers wanted players to easily differentiate one character from the other in the heat of a battle.
