Looks like all those leaked pictures were fake after all. But here we are now as Sony unleashes its latest handheld creation: the PSP2... I mean the NGP or Next Generation Portable.

And so spills the beans as they’ve finally unveiled the next generation of the PlayStation Portable () over at the Sony Tokyo Press Conference. Though not exactly calling it the ‘2,’ the latest PlayStation Portable is codenamed the ‘’ or the ‘.’

The handheld is packed with tons of features which Sony presented under five different concepts: ‘Revolutionary User Interface,’ ‘Social Connectivity,’ ‘Location-based Entertainment,’ ‘Convergence of Real’ and ‘Virtual or Augmented reality,’ and a ‘PlayStation Suite Compatibility.’

The or NGP, whatever you like to call it, will have an OLED touch-sensitive screen at the front and back and also possess tilt-sensitive controls which allows the player to have a more interactive experience with their games. It also has a built-in and connectivity and utilizes a new form of digital storage that doesn’t need UMD. Sony has confidently expressed that the NGP is just as powerful as the PlayStation 3. It will also have apps where you can connect your PSP2 to other PSP2s in a specific area and you can learn what are the popular games in that place.

As for the games, Sony has unveiled quite an impressive roster once the console kicks in next holiday season:

  • Uncharted
  • Killzone
  • WipeOut
  • Resistance
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Hustle Kings
  • Hot Shots Golf

It seems Sony is not going to jump on the 3D bandwagon soon as they start their own trend in the next frontier of handheld gaming.
