iOS 4.3 Beta Hints Apple TV Gaming Platform

There are some discoveries in the iOS 4.3 beta code that suggests gaming platform possibilities for Apple TV. But everything is still a mystery.

Before announced its new $99 streaming TV, there were rumors that the device could get some support for third-party iOS apps in its next iteration. Unfortunately, nothing materialized. However, a new report claims that there are evidences of future features for the TV — thanks to .

Two strings, “com.apple.appletv.play.live.thunder” and “.play.archive.thunder”, are pointing out that it is feasible for to stream games or archive them for offline play. It can be speculated that the “OpenGL is mature and thoroughly implemented enough”, making low-bandwidth data streams and local computing possible. However, nothing in the code suggests that it will be the case.

Another things that beats one’s brain are two codenames, Sedona and Flagstaff, that were also discovered in the iOS 4.3 beta. Referring to director, episode and season, Sedona may be a new video purchasing and streaming feature, while Flagstaff can mean account types and dealers. However, the truth about these codenames still remain a mystery.

The popularity of iOS games has contributed to the success of iPhone, and iPod Touch. On the other hand, handheld gaming device makers like Sony and Nintendo were put into the defensive. That said, the addition of gaming to Apple TV could enable the Cupertino-based company to invade a consumer’s living room, and give incumbents like , Nintendo and Sony an intense competition.
