Sanjay Jha Explains Motorola Xoom $799 Price Tag with 4G Feature at MWC 2011

Motorola's got some explaining to do about the whopping price of the Motorola Xoom tablet.
We were as surprised as you are when the Motorola Xoom was tagged $799, but Motorola Mobile Chief Sanjay Jha immediately tries to extinguish the fire as he explains over at the Mobile World Congress, MWC, in Barcelona that people will be getting their money’s worth with the 32GB 3G Motorola tablet thanks to its secret ingredient: the 4G.
The tablet market leader, the 32GB 3G Apple iPad tablet currently has a price tag of $729 in the US. Jha shares that people that a 4G device compatible on the Verizon network is worth the extra $70.
“We felt that our ability to deliver 50Mb/s would justify the $799 price point. It is 32GB with 3G and a free upgrade to 4G. Being competitive with iPad is important. We feel that from the hardware and capabilities we deliver we are at least competitive and in a number of ways better [than the iPad].”
A Wi-Fi version of the Motorola Xoom seems to be on the works as well. No price has been announced but the executive announces that it will be “meaningfully cheaper” and will play around the price of the Wi-Fi version of the iPad which is at $599.
