Japan Games Losing Their Vigor – PlatinumGames CEO
Can PlatinumGames save Japan's gaming industry?
If it’s one thing Japan games have been telling us over the past few years, it’s that the industry is crumbling to mediocrity, lagging far behind when it comes to creativity and quality to its global competitors. This is what PlatinumGames CEO, Tatsuya Minami, thinks as well when he delivered his thoughts about the country’s gaming industry at his note “Platinum Next: The Japanese Standard Bearer In Global Competition.”
“Not so long ago, Japan lead the world’s games business, and it was not a stretch to call games a uniquely Japanese specialty; however, now it appears that Japanese games companies have lost their vigor.”
Minami also shares about the lack of originality Japan’s game developers have been doing in their recent titles.
“Series grow ever-longer; original titles are on the decline… Games with ‘new’ at their core are disappearing. Japanese games that garner worldwide acclaim are slipping away. This state of affairs deeply saddens us.”
Ultimately, Minami wants PlatinumGames to bring back the lost vigor as the company aims to be “the face of Japanese game studios on the worldwide stage.”
