IK Multimedia names its iRig Mic as “the first handheld, quality condenser microphone for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.” There are other microphones for the iPhone in the past, but it is certainly one of the better units available.

The is ideal for the singers, vocalists and songwriters on-the-go, but may also be used for recording speeches, performance instruments, or other sound sources anywhere.

The iRig Mic conveniently plugs into an , or using the headphone jack. The connector includes a headphone pass-through plug, so users can monitor the recording input from the .

The can work with any third-party recording program for iOS, including Apple’s Voice Memos application. has its own collection of recording apps: iRig Recorder, VocaLive, and the AmpliTube series. All are designed to work well with the iRig Mic.

The complaint is that users must buy these applications besides the iRig Mic itself. There are free versions but the features are limited. The microphone’s size is as big as any condenser microphone, which is good or bad — depending on your purpose. For someone who just needs to do interviews for transcription purposes or someone who needs to record a speech, iRig Mic doesn’t seem to be a good choice.

Basically, the iRig Mic is a lower-end condenser microphone. So disappointment comes to those who are expecting the performance from a dynamic or more professional condenser setup. Nevertheless, for those who are on the go and need to record interviews, lectures or vocal tracks on an iOS device for instant mixing, editing and uploading, the iRig Mic is for you.
