According to a report from Wall Street Journal, Amazon is planning to launch a Netflix-like subscription service for digital books — much to be chagrin of some publishers.
Based on unnamed sources, Amazon is currently talking with several publishers regarding the said program — which would provide access to an online library in exchange for an unspecified annual fee. The sources also claim that the service would be available for Amazon Prime subscribers, and that the proposed library would feature primarily older works with monthly restrictions on the number of books a subscriber could read for free. Publishers would reportedly pocket a substantial fee for signing on to the program, even though some are reluctant to participate for fear that it might downgrade the value of the book business.
Apparently, it is still unclear whether any publishers agreed to participate on the said program.

While Netflix aims to be globally available, UK is not part of the list where the company will launch it services.
Film and television industry authority, Variety, reports that Netflix will arrive in UK next year: “Sources at leading European film distributors say as recently as last week Netflix reps confirmed plans to put roots down in both Spain and the United Kingdom in the first quarter of next year.”
But while the news seems unsurprising, Netflix omitted UK in its recent list of Latin American and Caribbean countries set for its global launch. However, the company declined tofurther comment on this. With just a couple of notable online streaming services in the country, Netflix might need more time to prepare and sign various licensing agreements. Moreover, they also need to deal with situation they never faced in North America.
But once Netflix UK becomes available, it will find itself in enviable position of having customers who already have compatible platforms. This can mean big competition with other streaming service providers like Amazon’s LoveFilm.

Amazon will be cutting down the cost of their tablet, and it might include the sophistication of their touchscreen.
According to DigiTimes’ sources, the decision of Amazon to cut costs on their tablet might include the refinement of the touchscreen. An off-hand industry suggested that the Android tablet would be utilizing just two-finger multi-touch, and not the 10-finger touch devices like the iPad 2 and others.
Losing the more advanced multi-touch could render the device incompatible with those several Android apps that might require more than two fingers. Apple took advantage of having much more support by enabling three and four finger gestures, as well as support for more third party apps.

The two decided to follow Apple’s new iOS subscription rules, barring links to something other than iTunes. Purchases for either will now have to go through the web without direct links. Google Books might also be affected, since its app disappeared from iTunes without explanation on weekend.
Apple’s new rules aren’t fatal to the apps’ successes. Kobo explained that much of its purchasing goes through the website. However, the move gives Apple an unfair advantage. Once the Apple’s rule holds, only the iBookstore will be allowed to have the direct purchasing link.
