Surprise! DVD Sales Sink, Digital Sales Rise in US

Soon to appear in your local museum of digital history: DVDs.

Well, viewers can’t say they didn’t see it coming. With the advent of digital content, it’s only a matter of time until DVDs become obsolete. A recent sales report from the Digital Entertainment Group in Los Angeles raised the curtains to reveal that DVD sales in the US sank by as much as 20% over the past 12 months. Digital sales however show a significant improvement, banking 9% increase over the same time frame.

According to the DEG report, sales of DVD and Blu-ray packaged goods fell from $2.6 to $2.1 billion. While total US home entertainment spending fell drastically from $4.6 to $4.2 billion. Digital sales however tells another story, as subscription-based rental and streaming boosted a total of 33% from $523 to $696 million.

So to whom should people put the blame on the DVD’s impending doom other than the obvious “digital is way better so everyone’s jumping there?” DEG notes that it was due to four “tentpoles”, which totaled in $1 billion in Blu-ray and DVD sales in Q1 of 2010. Plus, the 2010 Easter holiday season which fell outside the sales period.
