Coming this 2012: Sony PlayStation 4 with Motion Controls

Rumor alert! Sony's PlayStation 4 is said to feature a motion control technology, and will hit the shelves by 2012.

DigiTimes reported today that Sony’s manufacturing partners will begin working on its next-generation game console later this year. Though further information are still unavailable, it is said that the rumored PlayStation 4 will feature motion controls like Microsoft’s Kinect.

Moreover, Foxconn and Pegatron Technology – which were previously appointed to manufacture PlayStation 3 – is said to create the upcoming PS4. With regards to the number of units to be released, DigiTimes cited that Sony will launch at least 20 million units by next year. As for Sony PlayStation 4’s release date, it is said that the company will not launch the console earlier than 2013. But with Nintendo Wii U and Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox set for a 2012 release, Sony is in best interest to speed up PS4’s process to remain in the competition.

Next Xbox and PS4, Coming Soon?

Whether the next Xbox and PS4 will be coming soon or ten years from now, the upcoming consoles promise to be ten times much better than their predecessors.

Programming legend, John Carmack, told Eurogamer that the next Xbox and PlayStation 4 will be ten times more powerful than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. He also added that Microsoft and Sony’s respective gaming consoles will hit the stores ‘in a couple of years’.

This week’s reports suggested that Microsoft will announce its next Xbox at E3 2012, and a 2013 release is in the works. Sony, on the other hand, will continue to push its ten-year life cycle prediction for the PlayStation 3. Regardless, John Carmack said that the next gaming consoles will pose a tough challenge for game creators: What will they do have an outstanding graphics?

Sony Sticking with Traditional Controllers for PS4?

Motion control-only PlayStation 4, a no go according to PlayStation Move architect.

Even with the success PlayStation Move, Sony seems to be sending a message that their next PlayStation console will not ship with a Move-like controller instead of a traditional gamepad. Sony R&D wizard Dr. Richard Marks explains through an interview at Gamasutra that “we’re not trying to get rid of the gamepad.”

According to Marks, the idea that Sony might go for motion-only controllers for PS4 “won’t make sense.” So PlayStation 4 will stick to the traditional D-pad controllers then, but will most likely still be compatible for the PlayStation Move.
